BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) is an Undergraduate degree programme in medical field. This degree covers the medical knowledge of the homeopathic system. After completing this degree you are eligible to become a doctor in the homeopathic medical field. The degree holder is eligible to have the prefix as a doctor; the abbreviation is Dr. The course focuses on the alternative medical system of homeopathy.

Homoeopathy is a holistic structure of medicine, which is related to treating people with highly diluted materials given in mostly tablet form. Homeopathy medical system was developed in Germany, at the end of 18th century. This medical system revolves around concepts like- like cures like and law of minimum dose.
This medical system uses diluted solutions made from natural sources such as plants, animals and minerals for healing. Depending on the disease, the cure is extracted from the source and diluted (keeping in mind the law of minimum dose). The diluted remedy aids the body in self healing and thus relieves symptoms and restores good health.

Homeopathy is the third popular medication system in India, after the allopathic and the ayurvedic system. According to this system the EMOTIONS, MIND and BODY are interlinked and remedies which effect on them will seem to fit for the patient. The person got sick or has a disorder if he is out of the harmony of the above three.

The homeopathic medicines are given to the patient as per their physical symptoms, emotional problems and their lifestyle. And the best part of this medication system which makes it valuable among the others that there is NO SIDE EFFECT on the body with these medicines.

Central Council of homeopathy – CCH
In 1973 the Indian Parliament passed Homeopathic central council bill and accordingly Homeopathic Central Council was established in 1974. This council is the controlling authority of the educational and practice of Homoeopathy in India.

Admission Procedure

The aspirants must pass HSC (10+2) with a minimum of 50% or equivalent for applying the B.H.M.S program. It should be with Biology, Chemistry, English and Physics. The admission is carried out on merit basis. The candidate should have to go through the different national and state level entrance examination.

The candidate should have minimum 17 years old.

No candidate shall be admitted to BHMS Degree course if he is blind (including colour blindness) deaf or dump

Some states conduct the entrance examinations along with the MBBS and BDS test. Some entrance exams are listed here:

  • NEET – National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test
  • PUCET – Punjab University Common Entrance Test
  • KEAM – Kerala Engineering, Agriculture and Medical

Duration & Curriculum

The degree Course of BHMS (Degree) shall comprise a Course of study consisting of Curriculum and Syllabus provided in these regulations spread over a Duration of 5½ years, including compulsory internship of one year duration after passing the Final Degree Examination.

On successful completion of the Internship and on the recommendation of the Principal of the Homeopathic College concerned, the concerned University shall issue the Degree to such candidates. Instead of allopathic pharmacology homeopathic students has to study materia medica, organon of medicine, pharmacy and repertory.

Subjects: Subjects for study and examination for the B.H.M.S. (Degree) course shall be as under:-

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology including Biochemistry
  • Organon of Medicine, Principles of Homeopathic Philosophy and Psychology.
  • Homeopathic Pharmacy
  • Homeopathic Materia Medica & Therapeutics
  • Pathology and Microbiology
  • Forensic medicine and Toxicology
  • Practice of Medicine.
  • Surgery
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Community Medicine
  • Case taking and repertory

PG Courses

When it comes to PG Courses, BHMS graduates have a handful of choices available in front of them. The most commonly pursued PG course is MD (Doctor of Medicine). Postgraduate MD Homeopathy course is 3 years long. After completing BHMS course and internship, graduates may do MD in any one of the following subjects-

  • MD in Homeopathy- Materia Medica
  • MD in Homeopathy- Homeopathic Philosophy
  • MD in Homeopathy- Repertory
  • MD in Homeopathy- Paediatrics
  • MD in Homeopathy- Organon of Medicine
  • MD in Homeopathy- Pharmacy
  • MD in Homeopathy- Psychiatry

One may choose an area of specialization and pursue PG Course of MD accordingly. Other than MD, another relevant PG course available in front of Graduates is- M.Sc. (2 years long academic program). Some of the well known relevant M.Sc. programs are as follows-
