Pharm D (Doctor in Pharmacy)
Pharm D course introduced by the Government of India and the Pharmacy Council of India in 2008. The Pharm.D program is a pre-PhD, post-graduate professional doctoral program of 6 years. It was introduced to improve clinical pharmacy services in India.
Pharm D is the discipline that deals with preparing and dispensing medicines. The course has been designed to train eligible candidates in clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care. Upon successful completion of the course, students gain skills in diagnosis and treatment of diseases, selection and therapeutic usage of drugs, monitoring of patients, etc.
After clearing Pharm.D qualification, it is clarified to all universities that passed out students can directly register for Ph.D.

About the Course
The Pharm.D degree requires five years of classroom and hospital based didactic study (two years didactic post-baccalaureate course), followed by one year of internship training in addition to ongoing practical and research project. The course aims to prepare eligible candidates students in the management of patient medication therapy and improving patient outcomes.
The academic study includes the same subjects such as B. Pharm, in addition the pharmacy practice components are emphasized such as Hospital Pharmacy, Community Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapeutics, Clinical Pharmacy, Biostatistics and Research Methodology, Clinical Toxicology, Clinical Research, Pharmacoepidemiology, Pharmacoeconomics, Clinical Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacotherapeutic Drug Monitoring. Further to add, in the fifth year of the course the candidate has to perform a project work for six months.
For admission to the course, candidates need to have passed a relevant entrance examination, conducted at State and national levels or by any university at individual level. Later, candidates qualifying the entrance exam needs to qualify group discussion and personal interview round as part of the counseling procedure.
Besides these entrance examinations, some institutes in the country also have their own admission criteria and offer admission on the basis of the candidate’s score in such qualifying examination.

- GPAT (Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test)
- UP-CPMT (Uttar Pradesh Combined Pre-Medical Test)
- PMET (Punjab Pre-Medical Entrance Test)
- UPSEE Pharmacy (Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination)
Science stream students (any group- Mathematics or Biology), who have passed 10+2 board examination (at least 50% marks) from a recognized board OR Diploma in Pharmacy holders (from a PCI recognized institute) are eligible to pursue this course.
Student should have completed 17 years of age by December 31 of the year of admission to the course.
There may be reservation of seats for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes candidates in accordance with the instructions issued by the Central Govt. /State Govts. /Union Territory Administrations.

After completing the Pharm D course, one get license to practice as a pharmacist in India and abroad. Pharm. D. degree provides several national and international employment opportunities in areas such as Academics, Management, Research and Administration. Job opportunities are available in the Pharmaceutical industry. Graduates may practice in Government hospitals, Private hospitals, Community health centers, Nursing homes and NGOs. One may take on technological, administrative or marketing positions in this industry. Clinical research organizations and research labs also hire Pharm D Degree holders. Teaching is another job opportunity. One may take on the job post of a lecturer/instructor at Pharmacy Colleges/institutes.
