NIT Colleges in India: The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are autonomous public institutes and are governed by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. These were declared as institutions of national importance alongside Indian Institutes of Technology. NITs are of national importance and has received special recognition from the Government of India.
NIT Colleges in India

The NIT Council is the supreme governing body of India’s National Institutes of Technology (NIT) system and all 31 NITs are funded by the Government of India. These institutes are among the top ranked engineering colleges in India second only to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India. All NITs are autonomous which enables them to set up their own curriculum.

NITs are known for its excellence in education and placements. The NIT’s admission process is based on the results of the All Indian Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). NITs offer degree courses at bachelors, masters, and doctorate levels in various branches of engineering and technology. Various nationwide college surveys rate most of the NITs over other colleges in India, except for the IITs and a few other institutions.

Admission to NITs

Eligibility for admissions to the NIT colleges in India has changed from the year 2017. This is because of the two major changes in JEE Main. The first one was the removal of the normalization that was used to arrive at the JEE Main scores. The second one that Admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating though Central Seat Allocation Board will be based on All India Rank subject to the condition that the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th  class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.

The MHRD has approved the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). This framework outlines an approach to rank institutions across the country. The methodology takes inputs from the overall recommendations and the broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD to set-up the basic parameters for ranking various universities and institutions in the country.

Before we get started, let me clarify that these rankings are based on criteria such as training education, resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Results, Outreach and Perception.
