Petroleum is a nonrenewable source of energy. Petroleum Engineering is the study of production and exploration of Petroleum. The one who holds the degree in this discipline are called Petroleum Engineers. Petroleum engineering is apprehending the methods of designing and development for extraction of oil and gas from deposits below the Earth’s surface.
Petroleum engineering requires a good understanding of other related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (well logging), drilling, economics, reservoir simulation, reservoir engineering, well engineering, artificial lift systems and petroleum production engineering.
Petroleum Engineering: About the Course
Petroleum Engineering is an Undergraduate Level Bachelor’s Degree program. The course is of 4 years duration is divided into 8 semesters. This discipline offers various specialization courses that deal with the production of hydrocarbons (natural gas or crude oil). The course includes theoretical subjects as well as practical lab sessions. The course offers UG and PG degree programmes. Some undergraduate petroleum courses are:
- E./B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering
- Tech in Petrochemical Engineering
- Tech in Applied Petroleum Engineering
- Tech in Petroleum Refinery Engineering
- Tech in Petroleum Reservoir and Production Engineering
Admissions are done through entrance test. Students can apply for JEE Main 2018 after finishing 10+2 level exam in order to take admission in undergraduate engineering courses. Students who aspires to take admission in IITs or NITs are required to clear the JEE Advanced 2018 exam.
Students should have qualified Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2018) for admission in postgraduate engineering courses. Admissions are also taken on the basis of entrance test conducted by various state level and university exams.
Petroleum Engineering: Eligibility
For UG: The candidate should have passed 10+2 examination from CBSE or any other equivalent examination board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology as core subjects. The candidates should also fulfill minimum qualifying marks in aggregate of the subjects.
For PG: The candidate should have a B.Tech degree with a minimum passing percentage in an aggregate of the subjects studied at the degree level
